Playing the Field
« on: December 28, 2012, 08:37:14 PM »
David lay in bed and stared at the text for what felt like an instant and an hour, unsure of what to do or how to go about it.

Hey, are you up for some fun tonight?

It was from Bill and the first part of his staring had been because it hadn't been from Cain and he'd expected it to be.  The rest was because he was thinking about how to answer.  It had been four nights since he'd seen Bill, since he'd taken him out for an extravagant dinner and asked him to date him, only to be told that Bill would 'think about it'.  He'd taken it as a politely-disguised 'No'.  He'd buried that pain by turning his attention to another man instead and it had been a beautiful distraction... or was it a distraction?  Because if it had all been just a distraction, did that mean Bill was the main course and Cain was a side or a dessert or... fuck, he didn't know and food analogies were stupid and too much for his brain at this hour.

What it came down to was a decision he didn't feel ready to make.  The past two nights he'd been with Cain and it had been the complete opposite to his date with Bill.  Cain was sexy, gentle and knew what he wanted; he was eager to be in a relationship with him where Bill was insecure, nervous about the uncertainty of life, incomplete due to missing his brother and completely messed up about being in a relationship.  It should have been easy.  Before he'd woken up tonight, David would have told anyone that asked that it was decided; it was him and Cain.  But now here he was staring at this text from Bill, who was complicated and intriguing and all kinds of sexy and it didn't feel decided at all.

He and Cain had spent some full on time together and both days had finished at Cain's place with David sleeping poorly.  It'd made him irritable so he'd announced he'd sleep the day just gone on his own at his place, wake up refreshed and spend the night getting himself back to normal before he saw Cain again.  Though they'd had two fantastic date nights where David had taken the mortal to Echelon for a meal, to a movie each night and to Fantastika and the beach afterwards (on the respective nights) - finishing with some truly sensational sex - Cain had conceded David's point.

That was the kind of guy he was; he'd told him from the outset that he understood David had needs that he couldn't always meet and he wouldn't get jealous over it.  Now the vampire believed him.  Cain hadn't seemed to mind the thought that he'd take a night to go out to get a couple of drinks to sort himself out properly before he called again.  He wondered if that would change once he found out David spent the night with the man he'd asked to be in a relationship with him first; damn, that sounded horrible even in his thoughts and there was no way he could hurt Cain like that.

Problem was... he really wanted to see Bill again.  At this stage, his intentions were honourable and the 'fun' Bill offered David didn't feel the need to accept, but what could he say?  'Hey, I've missed you - so much that I spent the last two nights hanging out and fucking this really awesome guy'?  Yeah, that wouldn't go over well, so he couldn't really tell Bill anything either, especially via text.  Before he knew it, he was calling the mortal, the phone pressed to his ear and his throat rumbling as he cleared it.  He'd only just woken up and it would be audible, in all likelihood.

When the call was answered at the other end, however, his first words didn't sound sleepy so much as subdued... because the last things he and Bill had said to each other hadn't been fun and his heart hadn't forgotten.  "Hey, it's David... how're you doing?" he said as nonchalantly as he could manage, but instead coming off as genuinely caring about the answer.

Bill had done a lot of thinking. Four nights, and he had done a lot of thinking, far more than he had ever done before, or at least more than he usually did. And after four nights…he still hadn't figured it out. He liked David, and it was clear that David liked him. But…he didn't want to be a vampire, and even if David claimed he didn't want to turn him…how long would it take? How long would it take for David to realize that either he did want Bill around for eternity or he didn't? And if he didn't, what would stop him from dumping Bill then and there? Where would Bill be, if he allowed David to take him in and David suddenly didn't want him anymore?

He had spent three days trying to figure out just that, and it had taken him three days to make plans. He supposed that…maybe if he could finish college…but no, he couldn't just take 'let's date' as David promised to take care of him completely. It was perhaps that revelation that had spurred him into actually considering the positive. What if David did want him for eternity? What if he did want to turn Bill?

His brother was already a vampire, so Bill would have to be turned eventually as it was, right? He hadn't even thought of that possibility before, and now that he had…wouldn't it make being with David easier? Of course, he didn't want to turn into a vampire until he had found his brother, but it certainly wouldn't hurt with David, would it?

And then of course, there were his own feelings towards David, and that certainly couldn't be discounted, could it? In fact, that really should be the most important thing to consider, at least as much if not more than any possible future they might have together. And when Bill thought of David, he got all sorts of fluttery feelings inside of him, and he just couldn't tell what that meant. Excitement, intrigue, revulsion? Well, he was certain it wasn't the latter, but instead a combination of the first two.

It took him well over a moment before he realized he had even sent the text to David, blinking at the screen in surprise at the message sent. He remembered vaguely composing a message to David, and checking his last message, he had apparently sent one as well. It had been fairly well written--promising nothing, but at the same time leaving it open to whatever might happen that night. He supposed he should just wait and see if David even answered him back, now.

Bill uncurled from his place on the shabby piece of furniture he called a bed, still in pajama pants and a skinny t-shirt. He hadn't gotten dressed that day, reveling in a rare day off. He hadn't done anything but sleep and think of David and his brother, and it had been rather wonderful.

A moment later, his phone buzzed not with another text, but instead with a call…from David. Bill let it ring twice before snatching it up, wondering if he were too late, if David had written him off already. The tone and words on the other end immediately belayed his fears, however, as David's caring tone came across.

"Hey," Bill answered, immediately shy once again, worried that he had completely fucked things up before they even started. But he had said that he wanted to think about it, and he had done nothing but since then. "I um…I'm good, I guess. How are you?"

He hated his inability to form a coherent sentence right then, but he supposed he just needed a moment to compose himself as the flutters in his stomach came back hardcore. He could imagine David now, tuning out everything around him just to talk to Bill…who even showed that kind of devotion, really? Even Emil held multiple conversations at once, or paid attention to his phone or to Lamar when Bill was there. With David, though, he felt as if he were the only person in the vampire's life, and he liked that.

David chuckled warmly.  "You guess?" he teased, the smile obvious in his tone.  "That doesn't sound too positive.  Me?  I'm better for hearing your voice, what sort of fun did you have in mind for us tonight?"

His good cheer was fading by the end of his sentence so he didn't elaborate; thinking of seeing Bill gifted him a strange feeling of intense excitement tinged with trepidation and though he wanted to focus on the good feelings, it was impossible to ignore the rest.

Their last date hadn't ended well at all and though he was loathe to bring it up immediately - or even ask Bill if he'd come to any conclusions - he couldn't help but recall the disappointment he'd been left with.  He couldn't be too hopeful just yet.

Bill curled up on the bed again, smiling a little at David's easy tone. He certainly didn't detect anything wrong, though to be honest he was at a bit of a loss as to what he and David could do that night--going for coffee was out of the question, and if they went to a club, Bill wasn't sure if his intent would be obvious enough. He wanted…wanted to date David, oddly enough. He just…wasn't sure how to make that known.

"I don't know," he admitted honestly. "I just…I want to see you again."

He hesitated, debating whether to make his intentions known over the phone. He decided against it, figuring that it was better to tell David something like this in person. He thought for a long minute before he continued on, forcing himself up off the bed to actually get dressed.

"I mean I would say coffee or a drink, but…I'm too young to drink and you don't drink coffee."

Again, David was inspired to laugh.  It wasn't so much that what Bill said was incredibly funny so much as incredibly cute and it prompted this feeling of indulgence and... fascination with him.  If he took a moment to ponder this odd transfixedness he had with merely hearing a mortal mutter words - not even particularly clever ones, just sensible, practical ones! - he would think himself of lesser mental faculty... except he was a willing participant in this surrender of sensibility.  That was what emotons did to a rational being, he supposed; rendered them stupid.  But he liked it, regardless.

"How about you call a cab and come to my place, then?  I'll pay for it when you get here so feel free to stop and get some food to have on the way - I'll pay for that, too and we'll consider it my fare for not having to get out of bed... to greet you," he said meaningfully, his voice turning husky with innuendo he was confident Bill would pick up on.

Oh, that didn't sound very date-like at all. That sounded like a hookup and just that. Of course they could just play video games like they were friends, but that didn't really give them the date feeling that Bill was hoping for. Of course, he couldn't just expect David to pay every time and it wasn't like he had much money, so he supposed that just getting a cab to David's house would be just fine.

"Maybe we can go for a motorcycle ride once I get there?" he asked timidly, hopefully. That would at least get them out of the house, and it wouldn't force David to drive all the way across town to pick him up, either. He hoped David agreed, at least.

"I mean that sounds fine…great! That downs great!" he knew he was blabbering a little bit, but he just couldn't help it. "I'll be there in a little bit, kay?"

As soon as the request for a ride on his bike came, David realised that he'd made a mistake regarding the 'fun' Bill's initial text had offered.  It seemed he'd barely had time to process this realisation before Bill was backing out of saying what he really wanted and just complying with his wishes - and that wasn't the sort of equal relationship he was looking for at all!

"No, no, hang on, wait!" he cried at his phone, hoping he'd spoken fast enough to secure Bill's attention.  He pulled the mobile away from his ear to check that the timer was still ticking away just to be sure the call hadn't ended on the mortal's side (very relieved to see that it was still going).  "Would you rather go out?" he asked for confirmation.  "Because if you want to go for a ride, I'll just come pick you up instead, there's no need to wait on a cab."

Bill had been about to hang up when David begged him to wait, so wait he did. The next sentence made him a smile a little, small pulses of fluttering erupting in his stomach as he responded with a smile. That was exactly what he had wanted, yes.

"If you don't mind," he answered happily, already eagerly awaiting the roar of the motorcycle outside of his door. "That would be amazing."

"I'll do my best," the blonde laughed, thinking it silly that his arrival would be labelled 'amazing'... but liking it nevertheless.  "See you real soon, bye."  This time he did hang up and leapt out of bed to go and shower, all thoughts of Cain suddenly forgotten.
